Bagrat Alekyan

Alekyan Bagrat Gegamovich, born on April 15, 1951, in Yerevan (Armenia) to the family of public servants. He is married and has a daughter.
In 1968 he entered the Faculty of Medicine at the Yerevan State Medical Institute. After the graduation (1974) he moved permanently to Moscow and since February 1975 to June 2016 onwards he worked in Department of Interventional diagnostics and treatment of cardiovascular diseases at the Bakoulev Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery.

Since June 2016, he is currently the Deputy Director of scientific work at the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery.
In 1980, he defended his thesis on “Coronary arteries, hemodynamics and myocardial contractile function in patients with coronary heart disease and postinfarction myocardial sclerosis in terms of surgical treatment”.
In 1986, he defended his doctoral thesis on “Modern diagnostic aspects of complete transposition of great vessels according to interventional diagnostics”.
The main direction of scientific research – interventional diagnostics and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Since 2005 – the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Since 2011 – academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Since 2013 – academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Since 2012 – the foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.
Member of the editorial boards and the editorial boards of the following journals: “Creative Cardiology”, “Cardiovascular pathology in children”, “Clinical and experimental surgery n.a. Academician B.V. Petrovski”, “Complex problems of cardiovascular diseases”.
Alekyan B.G. is also a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal “Structural heart diseases.”
Since 2014 – Editor-in-Chief of Endovascular Surgery Journal.
Since 2007 he sponsors scholarships for students of Yerevan State Medical University n.a. M. Heratsi.
Since 2013, he is the President of the Association of Physicians of the Union of Armenians In Russia

1997 – “Ultrasound diagnostics of brachycephalic lesions.”
1999 – “Endovascular and minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery in children.”
2001 – “Endovascular surgery for brachiocephalic lesions.”
2002-“Interventional therapies for coronary artery disease.”
2006 – “Acute coronary syndrome. The possibilities for diagnostics and treatment”.
2008 – Handbook on interventional treatment of cardiovascular diseases (in 3 volumes).
B.G. Alekyan has written several chapters in following publications: Lectures on Cardiovascular Surgery (ed. L.A. Bokeria, 2001); Lectures on Cardiology (ed. L.A. Bokeria and E.Z. Golukhova, 2001); Physician’s Handbook “Heart diseases” (ed. R.G. Oganov, I.G. Fomina, 2006); Cardiology. National Guidelines (ed. E.V. Shlyakhto, 2013). He is one of the authors of the books published abroad: Endovascular Therapy Course Coronary and Peripheral (France, 1998), Peripheral Vascular Interventions (The United States, 2004); Peripheral Options Interventions (second edition, USA. 2008).
He supervised eight doctoral and 47 master’s theses, as well as over 1000 scientific publications.
Since 1999 till 2012 he was the Director of Moscow International Course on Endovascular Therapies.
From 2012 onwards he is the Director of the International Congress TCT-Russia.
Since 1999 – Head of Endovascular Surgery Division in the Russian Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons.
Since 2002 President of Russian Scientific Society of Endovascular Surgeons and Interventional Radiologists.
From 2010 onwards he is the chief non-staff specialist at the MOH Russia in endovascular diagnostics and treatment.
He is a member of the Russian Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons, Russian Association of Angiologists and Vascular Surgeons.
In 2009 he was elected a member of the American Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI).
In 2012 he was elected a member of the European Society for Cardiovascular and Endovascular Surgery.
Awards:
1997 – Medal “In Commemoration of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow.”
2000 – Silver Burakovskiy Medal for excellence
in teaching young professionals for cardiovascular
surgery.
2001- Annual Burakovskiy Prize and
Gold Medal “For the outstanding achievements
in endovascular treatment of cardiovascular diseases”.
2003 – Medal of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences for the Developing
Medicine and Public Health.
2009 – Awarded by the RAMS Presidium with Bakulev Prize for publication of the book “Handbook on interventional treatment of cardiovascular diseases” (in 3 volumes, ed. by L.A. Bokeria and B.G. Alekyan).
2010 – Awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation “For significant contribution to the social and healthcare policy implementation”.
2006 – Awarded with the “Order of Friendship” by presidential decree.
2014 – Awarded with the “Order of Honor” by presidential decree.
2015 – Laureate of the Russian Federation Government Prize in the field of science and technology.
